Welder certification
You certify welders to ISO 9606-1 (or ASME IX, QW) — an examination, a designation string built from the qualified variables, and a certificate with a validity window.
Under ISO/IEC 17024, the scheme is the product and the audit is about governance:
- the examination is witnessed by a qualified invigilator, whose own qualification is checked at the time;
- the examiner, the evaluator and the decision-maker are enforced as different people;
- the certificate is bound, permanently, to the scheme revision it was issued under.
Validity is where certificates quietly lapse — continuity confirmation, six-month evidence, revalidation and recertification routes are exact rules that a spreadsheet can’t hold.
Procedure qualification
You qualify welding procedures to ISO 15614-1 or ASME IX — a procedure test, an evaluated WPQR/PQR, and a qualified range computed from the essential variables.
The range is the whole point. A procedure tested at one set of variables covers a band of production, so “does this WPS cover this joint” is a calculation, not a filing question — and the finding that should never have been a finding when it’s answered from memory.
