NDT extent and RT/UT volume that scale with the code

The examination extent on a piping system is set by the applicable code and service — a percentage of welds, raised for higher-pressure or category-M fluid service, with acceptance read against the code and its referenced articles. Deciding that extent weld by weld, and tracking which joints have been shot, read and accepted, is where coverage drifts and radiography backlogs hide.

Every pipe, fitting and weld carries a material and a heat, and the code wants that chain intact from the mill certificate to the weld map. Who this is for

This page has two readers, and they work on the same steel.

You fabricate process piping — spools for refineries, petrochemical plant, gas processing, power. You cut, fit and weld pipe, fittings and flanges to an isometric.

You own the welding:

  • the WPS,
  • the welder qualifications,
  • the weld map,
  • the material and heat behind every joint.

Or you are the NDT contractor the fabricator brings in to prove those welds — radiography, ultrasonics, PT/MT — reading each joint against the code and issuing the reports that let the weld be accepted.

The work is split by design. The fabricator makes it; the NDT contractor checks it.

But the turnover package the client signs for is one thing, and it only closes when every weld reconciles to its examination and its heat. Worgify serves both sides of that split, on one record.

The code that governs the work

Process piping is built and examined to the ASME B31 family — B31.3 for process piping, B31.1 for power piping — with the joining qualified under ASME IX. The code fixes two things that drive the whole job:

Qualification of the procedure and the welder. ASME IX qualifies the welding procedure specification and the welder or operator against essential variables — base metal P-number, filler F-number, thickness range, position, preheat and PWHT.

Whether this WPS and this welder actually cover this joint is a range calculation, not a filing question.

The examination extent and its acceptance. B31.3 sets the required percentage of examination by fluid service — a baseline for normal service, more for severe cyclic or category-M service — and points radiography and ultrasonics at their acceptance criteria.

The extent is a rule the job has to hit and prove, weld by weld.
