Surveyor witness and hold points punctuate the whole build
A classification-society surveyor witnesses defined stages and signs off at hold points — fit-up, welding, NDT results, pressure and tightness tests. The work cannot pass the point until the records for it are in front of the surveyor, complete and reconciled. When the weld log, the NDT reports and the material documents live in separate piles, every hold point becomes a scramble to assemble the evidence before the surveyor's visit.

Weld volume and traceability at a scale paper cannot hold
A hull or a jacket is tens of thousands of metres of weld across thousands of joints, each carrying a procedure, a welder, a material and a heat. Class rules want that chain intact from the mill certificate to the weld map. On a spreadsheet the size alone guarantees drift — joints that never got logged, welders whose qualification lapsed mid-block, heats that no longer match.

NDT extent set by the rules, tracked by hand
The volumetric and surface examination extent — a percentage of welds by joint type and location, raised in critical areas — is fixed by the applicable class rules and read against their acceptance criteria. Deciding that extent joint by joint across a build this large, and tracking which welds have been shot, read and accepted, is exactly where coverage quietly falls short of what the rules require.

You build ships or offshore structures — hulls, superstructures, jackets, topsides, subsea structures.
Your product is welded steel at enormous scale. The work is governed less by a single directive than by the rules of a recognised classification society, with a surveyor present through the build to witness it.
The welding, the NDT and the inspection are the work. The class regime is the layer laid over it, and it decides:
- how much you examine,
- how you prove it,
- who has to watch.
The rules that govern the work
Shipbuilding and offshore fabrication are built and examined to the rules of a classification society. The recognised societies each publish rules for hull construction and for offshore structures, and the applicable set drives the welding and NDT requirements for the project.
Those rules fix the things that shape the shop:
Welding is done under a quality system. Class rules require welding to be carried out under a welding quality management framework consistent with ISO 3834, with qualified procedures and qualified welders.
Procedure qualification and welder qualification are to the recognised standards, approved for the ranges the joints actually need.
Examination extent and acceptance are set by the rules. The volumetric and surface NDT extent is a percentage by joint type and location, raised in critical and highly-stressed areas, with acceptance read against the class rules and their referenced criteria.
The extent is a rule the build has to hit and prove, weld by weld.
A surveyor witnesses the work. Class surveyors attend defined stages and sign off at hold points.
The evidence for each stage has to be complete and reconciled at the point the surveyor witnesses it — the record is not something assembled after the fact.
