FPC and the dossier live outside the work

EN 1090-1 makes CE marking conditional on a factory production control system, and the constancy of that system is what a notified body audits. When welding records, material certificates, calibration and inspection sign-offs sit in folders next to the work instead of inside it, the FPC is a binder you rebuild before every audit rather than a system that runs itself.

EXC1 to EXC4 sets how much you inspect and how you prove it — visual on everything, then NDT extents that rise with the class and the joint type. Deciding that extent by hand, job after job, is where coverage quietly drifts below what the class requires.

Who this is for

You fabricate structural steel and aluminium for construction — beams, columns, trusses, bracing, connections. Your product carries a CE mark under the Construction Products Regulation.

That mark isn’t a label you print. It’s a declaration of performance backed by a factory production control (FPC) system that a notified body assesses and keeps auditing.

The regime that governs you

EN 1090-1 is the harmonised standard for CE marking. It requires a documented FPC system and ties initial type testing and ongoing assessment to it.

EN 1090-2 sets the execution requirements and fixes the execution class — EXC1 to EXC4 — as the dial that scales rigour. The class you assign a component decides three things:

  • how much you inspect — visual, then NDT extents that rise with the class;
  • the acceptance criteria, via EN ISO 5817 quality levels;
  • how much you have to document.

It also requires a welding quality management system to ISO 3834 at every execution class — elementary, then standard, then comprehensive (ISO 3834-2) at EXC3 and EXC4.

So ISO 3834 isn’t optional colour: it’s a condition of executing to EN 1090 at all. Its demands on welder qualification (ISO 9606-1), procedure qualification (ISO 15614-1) and welding coordination are the spine of your FPC.
