Validity is decided at the moment of signing

An inspector's ISO 9712 certificate and an instrument's calibration both expire on a date, and a report signed after that date is void no matter how good the reading was. The check that catches it is usually a spreadsheet nobody opens until a client asks.

Readings are written on paper on the platform or in the trench, then retyped into a report in the office days later. Every transcription is a chance to introduce an error into the one document the client keeps.

Reports have to survive the assessment, not just the client

For an accredited lab the ISO 17025 assessor is not checking whether the result was right on the day of the audit — they check whether the system makes it right on every other day — method valid for purpose, equipment calibrated, person competent, and an issued report amended by supersession rather than edited in place.

Who this is

You inspect other people’s work. Someone else welds the joint, casts the part or lays the pipe; you prove whether it is sound.

That might be a field crew turning up to a site with PT, MT, UT and RT kit, or an accredited laboratory receiving samples under a scope. Either way you do not own the fabrication — you own the report, and the report is the product.

That changes the system of record. A fabricator’s world revolves around the joint.

Yours revolves around the inspector, the instrument and the method — and the evidence that all three were valid on the day the examination was made.

The regime you actually live under

Two standards sit over almost everything you do.

ISO 9712 governs the people. NDT personnel are qualified and certified per method, per level and per industrial sector.

A Level 2 in ultrasonics in one sector is not thereby certified for it in another. Certification runs up to five years, needs evidence of continuous activity to renew, and requires a near-vision check at least annually.

The three certification levels:

  • Level 1 works under instruction;
  • Level 2 interprets and evaluates against acceptance criteria;
  • Level 3 carries technical responsibility for procedures.

A report concluded at a level that did not have the authority to conclude it is a finding waiting to happen.

ISO/IEC 17025 governs the laboratory, if you are accredited. It is not about the test being right on the day of the assessment — it is about the system that makes it right on every other day:

  • the method valid for purpose,
  • the equipment calibrated with traceability to the SI,
  • the operator competent,
  • the conditions within limits,
  • the whole chain reconstructable afterwards.

It also demands that a statement of conformity carry a documented decision rule, and that an issued report be amended only by a superseding document, never edited in place.

The specific pain of proving it

The trap is timing. Certificates and calibrations expire quietly, and the cost of the lapse is not paid when it happens — it is paid at the moment someone signs a report the day after.

By then the examination is done and the recall is expensive.
