You weld for rail

The weld performance class sets the certification level

EN 15085 assigns each weld a performance class from its safety relevance and stress, and your certification level — CL1 to CL4 — is fixed by the highest performance class you actually produce. Take on one CP A joint and the whole shop is judged against CL1, whether the rest of the work needs it or not.

Welding coordination has to be a named person, with a deputy

EN 15085-2 requires responsible welding coordination personnel to ISO 14731 — a named coordinator with the competence for your level and a named deputy who can stand in. When that authority lives in an org chart instead of in the records, a signature on a joint cannot be traced back to a qualified person who was actually authorised on the day.

EN 15085-5 wants inspection, testing and documentation that ties every safety-relevant weld to its performance class, its procedure, the welder, the coordinator and the acceptance result. Reassembled from folders after the fact, that chain always has a link missing exactly where it matters.

Who this is for

You weld railway vehicles or their components — car bodies, bogie frames, underframes, couplers, and the brackets, mounts and sub-assemblies that hang off them. You may be the vehicle builder, or a sub-supplier who welds one part that ends up on a train.

It makes no difference to the standard: a bracket welded to a bogie frame is railway work, and it is in scope. If you weld safety-relevant parts for rail, EN 15085 governs you the same as it governs the prime.

The regime that governs you

EN 15085 — Railway applications: Welding of railway vehicles and components — is the sector standard, layered over the general welding quality requirements of ISO 3834.

Two mechanisms shape how you work:

The weld performance class drives your certification level. EN 15085-3 assigns each weld a performance class — CP A, CP B, CP C1, CP C2, CP C3 or CP D — from its safety category and the stress it carries.

Your manufacturer certification level then follows the most demanding weld you produce:

  • CL1 for the highest performance classes,
  • down to CL3 for the lightest welding,
  • CL4 reserved for organisations that design or coordinate but do not weld.

One CP A joint pulls the whole certification to CL1.

Welding coordination is named, and stricter than the baseline. EN 15085-2 requires responsible welding coordination personnel in line with ISO 14731, with competence matched to your certification level.

It expects a named coordinator and a named deputy, so authority over a safety-relevant weld never sits vacant. This is deliberately more demanding than general fabrication.

Underneath, ISO 3834 supplies the welding quality management requirements. EN 15085 is the rail-specific layer on top of it, never a separate product.

The specific pain of proving it

The recurring trap is that all three of these have to reconcile on every safety-relevant weld:

  • the performance class,
  • the certification level it implies,
  • the coordinator who was authorised on the day.

The notified body follows that chain per EN 15085-5.

When performance class is a note on a drawing, coordination is an org chart, and traceability is a folder, the links only look connected until someone audits them.
