In detail
Who this is for
You weld railway vehicles or their components: car bodies, bogie frames, underframes, couplers, and the brackets and sub-assemblies on them. You may be the vehicle builder or a sub-supplier.
For the standard it makes no difference: a bracket welded to a bogie frame is railway work, and EN 15085 governs you just as it governs the prime.
The regime that governs you
EN 15085 is the rail layer over the welding quality requirements of ISO 3834. Two mechanisms shape your work:
- Performance class sets the certification level. EN 15085-3 gives each weld a class, CP A to CP D. Your level follows the most demanding one: CL1 at the top, CL3 for the lightest welding, CL4 for those who design but do not weld.
- Coordination is named. EN 15085-2 requires coordinators to ISO 14731, matched to your level, with a named coordinator and deputy.
The specific pain of proving it
On every safety-relevant weld three things must reconcile: the performance class, the certification level it implies, and the coordinator authorised that day. The notified body follows that chain under EN 15085-5.
When the class is a note on a drawing and coordination is an org chart, the links only look connected until someone audits them.
