Hold point
A point in an inspection and test plan beyond which work must not proceed until the nominated party has attended and released it.
The distinction from a witness point is the consequence of absence. A hold point that has not been released stops the work. A witness point does not.
Why it is so often not a real control
Because on paper it is a row in a spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet is reconciled with the workshop afterwards. A hold point only functions as a control when passing it is actually blocked — which is uncomfortable the first time and is the entire point.
